Gut Knife: the hook blade in the CS2 knife pool
The Gut Knife is a compact blade built around a gut hook on the spine - a hunting feature meant for opening hide without driving the point in, and just as effective on rope or webbing. It belongs to the gold ★ tier, above Covert, even though Steam files knives under a Covert label. It arrived with the original Arms Deal knives and still shares the rare special slot with the Bayonet, the Flip Knife, the Karambit and the M9 Bayonet, which is why all of them wear share the same set of finishes. What a short blade does to a finish
Surface area is one of the main differences between the Gut and the longer knives it shares a slot with. A pattern that spreads out across a Karambit's curve lands compressed here, so colour zones read as blocks rather than gradients, and two copies of the same finish diverge further than they would on a bigger blade. Wear behaves the same way: scratching concentrates on a narrow blade, so glossy and painted finishes lose their look early. Exterior carries real weight on Fade, Marble Fade and Tiger Tooth, where the coating is the item. Dark and matte finishes - Night, Rust Coat, Damascus Steel, Black Laminate - hold up in the worn bands, which is where this model gets cheap without looking cheap. Set the exterior filter above the grid before comparing anything; on the Gut it reshapes the shortlist more than it does on the long blades.
Gut Knife Doppler and Gamma Doppler phases
Doppler and Gamma Doppler are families rather than single finishes, and the phase decides what you actually see. Doppler covers the numbered phases plus the gem phases Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl; Gamma Doppler covers its own numbered phases plus Emerald. Emerald belongs to Gamma Doppler and not to Doppler, which is the mix-up that shows up most often in listings and in search queries. The phase is set when the knife is unboxed and never changes, so on the market it is something you select rather than gamble on - every listing states it. Phase 2 is the pink-dominant one, and copies with the widest pink coverage carry a premium over ordinary Phase 2; on a blade this short the colour has less room to blend, so that difference is easier to read at a glance.
Unboxing, trade-ups and buying outright
There are several ways to get a CS2 Gut Knife, and they differ mainly in what you give up. Unboxing is the cheapest ticket and the worst odds: the rare special slot in those containers is shared with the other Arms Deal knives, so the chance of pulling a Gut specifically is a fraction of the already slim chance of pulling any knife at all, and the generation of the container fixes which finishes are even possible. A Covert trade-up inside a collection whose pool includes the Gut can also return a ★ item, which is why the old line about knives coming only from cases no longer holds. Buying outright is the only route where the finish, the phase, the exterior and the pattern are yours to choose instead of yours to accept - and if the Gut turns out to be a stepping stone, the rest of the knife catalogue is one step up.

Does every Gut Knife finish have a StatTrak version?
Yes, Vanilla included. StatTrak adds a kill counter tied to that exact copy, it keeps counting through trades and sales, and it never appears alongside Souvenir. A StatTrak copy costs more than the plain version of the same finish and exterior.
Why do two Gut Knives with the same finish and exterior sell for different amounts?
Because the exterior is a band, not a value. Inside it, the float sets how worn the copy actually is, and the pattern index decides how the finish is laid out - on Case Hardened it governs how much blue reaches the blade, on Crimson Web how tightly the webs sit. The float and pattern filters above the grid help you compare two listings.
What does Not Painted mean on a Vanilla listing?
It means the item carries no finish at all. Vanilla is the bare blade, so it has no float and no exterior, and the grid shows Not Painted where a condition would otherwise be.
Does a ★ knife change anything in a round?
No. The model, the inspect animation and the sounds change; the damage does not. A Gut Knife kills exactly the way the default knife does.
Is buying a knife on a P2P marketplace safe?
Yes, as long as the trade runs through the platform. The platform handles the buyer’s payment while the seller transfers the item through Steam, and releases the funds after the trade becomes final. Refuse any request to move the deal to Steam chat or another site.
Which finishes should a first-time knife buyers look at?
The plain camo and solid-colour ones. Safari Mesh, Scorched, Boreal Forest and Forest DDPAT sit at the bottom of the model's range, and having no gloss to lose, they stay presentable in exactly the worn exteriors where they are cheapest.
