About the Butterfly Knife CS2

The Butterfly Knife CS2 (or balisong) is one of the most iconic weapons in Counter-Strike. It was first introduced in the Operation Breakout update and has a pair of rotating handles that conceal a pivoting blade. Players mainly value the Butterfly Knife for its distinctive draw and inspect animations.

Like every knife in the game, it belongs to the gold star tier, the rare special item pool that sits above Covert. And like every knife, it changes nothing in a round: no extra damage, no faster swing. What you pay for is the animation and the status. The model held its floor through the move from CS:GO and is still traded as a Butterfly Knife CSGO skin by plenty of collectors. In the premium bracket it is usually weighed against the Karambit and the M9 Bayonet; if you are still choosing a model, the full CS2 knives catalogue is one click away.

All Butterfly Knife finishes

The finishes fall into three groups, each tied to a different set of cases.

  • The Operation Breakout group holds the originals: an unpainted Vanilla blade, the plain and camo work (Urban Masked, Forest DDPAT, Safari Mesh, Boreal Forest, Scorched, Night, Blue Steel, Stained), and the four finishes that made the model famous: Butterfly Fade, Slaughter, Crimson Web and Case Hardened.
  • The Chroma group is the colour-driven one: Butterfly Doppler, Butterfly Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Ultraviolet and Rust Coat.
  • The Gamma group is the newest addition to the model: Gamma Doppler, Butterfly Lore, Butterfly Autotronic, Butterfly Black Laminate, Bright Water and Freehand.

What sets the Butterfly Knife price

Two knives with the same name can sit far apart on the listings, and four things explain almost all of the gap.

  • Phase. Doppler and Gamma Doppler are pattern-based, so every copy rolls a phase. The numbered phases are the common ones; the gem phases are what collectors chase. On the Doppler those are Butterfly Ruby, Butterfly Sapphire and Black Pearl. On the Gamma Doppler it is the Gamma Doppler Emerald, which traders also call butterfly emerald.
  • Float and exterior. Every painted copy carries a float value that places it between Factory New and Battle-Scarred. On the darker finishes wear is barely visible, so a mid-float copy is the sensible buy. On Fade and Marble Fade the pattern can matter just as much as the float.
  • Pattern. The pattern seed decides how the finish actually lands on the blade: how much blue a Case Hardened shows, or what fade percentage a Fade came out with. Two copies with identical names and identical floats can sell at very different prices for this reason alone.
  • StatTrak. A StatTrak knife counts your kills and trades in its own price range, usually a step away from the plain version.

If you are on a budget, the cheapest Butterfly Knife CS2 skins are the plain and camo finishes from the Breakout group. Safari Mesh, Forest DDPAT, Boreal Forest and Scorched normally sit at the bottom of the model's range, so when the cheapest Butterfly Knife is the goal, sort the listings by price and start there.

How to get a Butterfly Knife in CS2

Butterfly Knife skins are extremely rare case drops. The butterfly knife cases are:

In every butterfly knife case except Breakout, the star slot is shared with several other knife models. All of them have also left the active drop pool, which is what keeps supply on this model tight. There are two other routes. A trade-up contract converts Covert-rarity skins from a single collection into a random star item from that collection's pool, which is still a roll of the dice but a much narrower one than opening CS2 weapon cases. Or you skip the randomness and buy the exact finish, float and phase you want from the listings above.

FAQ

Can I choose the exact float, phase or pattern when I buy?

Yes. Every listing shows the exterior and the float of that specific copy, and the filters let you set a float range, a Doppler phase, a fade percentage or a pattern before you compare prices. That is the practical difference from unboxing: you choose the copy instead of rolling for one.

Is StatTrak available on the Butterfly Knife?

Yes. StatTrak versions of the model exist and count kills made with the knife. They are listed as separate items from the plain versions, and the counter has no effect on how the knife looks in game.

What is a Vanilla Butterfly Knife?

It is the model with no finish applied, listed as a Butterfly Knife with a Not Painted exterior. Vanilla blades carry no float and no wear pattern, so every copy looks the same.

Is it safe to buy a knife on a P2P marketplace?

It is, if you follow the platform’s process. The item is transferred through Steam and the seller receives the funds after the trade is completed. The risk on items in this price range comes from off-site arrangements, so buy from the listings themselves and treat any direct message offering a better deal as a scam attempt.

Does the Butterfly Knife give any advantage in a match?

No. Knife skins are cosmetic only. The Butterfly Knife has its own deploy and inspect animations, but damage, range and speed are identical to the default knife every player starts with.
